I have received considerable matter for instruction from the works, and have enjoyed the hospitality of Mr. Martin, and I hope to go back a wiser but not a sadder man. One remark of Mr. Martin's sent a thrill of" pleasure through me, when he spoke about his desire for the young men in his employ to get on. Mr. Martin has set a noble example for those in his employ to copy, a career in which he has risen from almost nothing to the important position of head of one of the largest firms in Australia dealing with mechanical apparatus, and also to a position in the Legislative Council. I feel proud to accompany the Institute upon a visit which I hope will result in a lot of good to Victoria; but I hope that Mr. Martin will see his way clear to assist us in using the brown coal of Victoria--(laughter). There is no doubt at present we are all somewhat selfish, and each colony is working for itself, and the time has now come when we should have a federated institute connected with metals and mining, so that methods could be perfected and applied, and Australia instead of being behind might surely take the lead--(hear, hear). That is my greatest hope--especially in connection with the sulphides. I see no reason why the most modern machinery should not be manufactured in Australia. Why should we not occupy a proud position in the world like America does to-day 1 I agree with Sir John Forrest who, in speaking on federation, asked why should we who are one race and brothers, speak the same tongue, have the same aims and aspirations and the same blood, erect barriers against each other, when we should be working unitedly together as a people, and showing to the world w...
